    ... We will give from time to time some of the decisions from the attorney general's and the state superintendent's office. In a recent letter from the state superintendent he says, "All schools applying for state aid next year will have to be supplied with a set of six or eight maps and a globe."
    Christmas programs were quite generally held throughout the county by teachers and pupils. Though the law forbids strictly religious exercises, as such, to be held in our public schools, the religious spirit is nevertheless manifest. It would be well for those critics who claim there is no religious spirit in the public schools to visit the schools a little more. Of course we would not for a moment tolerate a sectarian spirit. Anything that tries to bind the universal spirit down to a narrow limit must forever be excluded from the public schools. All pupils are made to feel that they are the equal of everyone else. In our rural schools we are particularly fortunate in this respect...
    The new compulsory school law is certainly doing a great deal of good. In one case a family that had been neglectful in sending their children, after being notified, sent five children. When a law can do that is it is unwise to have it set aside or repealed.

    - E. H. Smith and Sheehan & Johnston will again fill the icehouses of the C. & N. W. railway company between Waseca and Tracy, and perhaps east of here for some distance.
    - Following are the officers recently elected by the West German Methodist Sunday school of Blooming Grove: William Remund, superintendent; Gottlieb Kanne, assistant superintendent; Miss Mabel Martí, secretary; R. H. Kanne, treasurer; Miss Lydia Hecht, organist.
    - A masquerade dance will be given by the Sisters of the O. D. S. H. Monday evening, January 10, in Wobshall's hall. Everybody invited.

1935/ Van Loh Puts in Claim for $2,023

    H. M. Gallagher appeared before the county board today as attorney for H. C. Van Loh, ex-superintendent of schools, presenting a bill for $2023.52 for mileage and expenses for the past six years.
    Mr. Gallagher pointed out that under the law the county has a right to fix the superintendent's salary but another statute says they shall pay his necessary expenses. In the past few years the board has fixed his salary with the clause attached that he pays own expenses. Mr. Gallagher stated that the claim will be taken to court if rejected by the board.

1935/ Contest Winner Is Announced

    Ralph Henkensiefken was declared winner of the child popularity contest which closed Saturday. He will receive a cash prize of $20 which will be awarded at the L. J. Lewis studio. Picture prizes will be awarded winners of second, third and fourth places. The contest was sponsored by a group of local business firms. The final standings of the 10 high were: Ralph Henkensiefken, 692,250; Mavis Armstrong, 636,000; Joan Manthey, 414,400; Patrick Donahue, 327,250; Bethel Krueger, 301,250; Shirley Kopishke, 123,800; Keith Spalding, 82,250; Virginia Plummer, 55,850; Roger Dahnert, 39,300; Cecelia Murphy, 33,850.

1935/ Johnstons Gets C & NW Ice Contract

    The W. C. Johnston Ice Co. of this city have been given the contract to furnish 5800 tons of ice for the C. & N. W. Ry. Co. They will also cut 1500 tons for their own ice house. The company will give work to some 15 men over a period of three weeks or more.

1960/ 62 Wasecans Attending 'Kato State

    Sixty-two students from Waseca are enrolled at Mankato State college according to the 1959-1960 issue of the Student and Faculty Directory. This directory is published by the Mankato State College chapter of Pi Delta Epsilon, the National Honorary Journalism Fraternity.
    The fraternity compiles the names from fall quarter registration.

1985/ Memorable teachers

    Following are two of the winning entries in an essay contest which challenged high school seniors to write about their most inspirational teacher. The contest was sponsored by Edward D. Jones & Co. of Waseca; entries are being featured throughout January and the Waseca County News.

    Bendix was inspirational as teacher and coach, by Steve Lueschen
    An effective teacher can have a positive influence on a student. In turn, a good influence can make a good impact on a student. This impact can last through your school years and also through our whole life.
    My most memorable teacher, and the teacher with the most influence on me, was Mr. Bendix.
    Mr. Bendix was an inspiration to me not only as a teacher, but as a coach as well. I took three trimesters of Western Civilization which he taught. Right from the beginning he made the classroom a very relaxed atmosphere. He didn't make the class look hard. Yet, he made it so there was some challenge involved.

    Hammond started day off well with smile for students, by Beverly Kath
    One teacher I will always remember is Mr. Hammond.
    It is always a pleasure to walk into his class in the morning because he always has a nice smile and says, "Good morning." He starts the day off well so the rest of the day goes well for me, too.
