Sister Elise Horihan (99), SHHS Teacher 1956-62
Sister Elise Horihan, 99, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, died at Assisi Heights Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012. Marcella Kathryn Horihan was born to Martin and Margaret (Maloney) Horihan on April 3, 1912, in Spring Grove. She grew up in the Lanesboro area and in 1931 entered the Sisters of St. Francis from St. Patrick Parish in Lanesboro. She made first vows in 1934 and perpetual vows in 1937. Sister Elise received a Bachelor's Degree in English from the College of St. Teresa (Winona) in 1943 and a Master of Arts in English from the Catholic University of America in 1952. Sister Elise began her teaching career at St. Augustine School in Austin in 1934 and from there she move to Portsmouth, Ohio, where she taught at St. Mary High School and Notre Dame High School. Following graduate studies in 1952, she returned to Minnesota where she was a secondary education teacher at St. Augustine High School, Austin (1954-1956); Sacred Heart High School, Waseca (1956-1962); and Lourdes High School, Rochester (1962-1965). Following an Intensive Spanish Conversation program in Cuernavaca, Mexico, in 1965, Sister Elise lived in Lima, Peru, where she served as a college teacher for a year while also continuing to develop her skills in conversational Spanish. She returned to Rochester and served as the Director of the Rochester School of Religion in 1967-1968. Sister Elise lived four years in Bogota, Colombia, where she was principal and teacher at Colegio Santa Francisca Romana (1968-1970) and taught at Hospital de San Ignacio (1970-1972). On return to the United States, she continued in the area of education and Hispanic ministry: Project Juntos, LaJunta, Colo.; St. Mary Parish, Las Animas, Colo.; Holy Rosary Parish, Graceville, Minn.; St. Theodore Parish, Albert Lea; Community Law Center, Santa Ana, Calif.; and St. Pius X parish, Glencoe. She also served with the Women's Institute for Life-long Learning (WILL) program at Assisi Heights (1977-1979) and as a Public relations volunteer at the College of St. Teresa, Winona (1986-1989). She retired to Assisi Heights in 1990. Sister Elise is survived by several nieces and nephews, and her Franciscan Congregation with whom she shared life for 80 years. Her parents preceded her in death as did her siblings: Emmet Horihan, Loretta Sullivan, Lucille Strong, Rosalie Leary Gilliam, Veronica Hayes and Helen Cowen. A Funeral Liturgy will be held Monday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights in Rochester. Friends may call at Assisi Heights for the Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, and before the time of the service on Wednesday. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Rochester.
