1912/ Home Team Won and Lost
The Waseca ball team broke even on two games played during the past week, winning from Le Sueur Center and losing to Owatonna. The game with Le Sueur Center, Thursday afternoon, was characterized by heavy slugging and costly errors on both sides. The visiting team had a bunch of heavy batters and looked for a time as though they would take the long end of the score. But when the game closed the score stood 6 to 4 in favor of Waseca. Hartwick pitched for Waseca and allowed six hits and struck out three men. Seven hits were secured off Traxler, the visitors' pitcher, but he struck out five men. The excellent fieldwork of Foster and Wallschlaeger of the home team were features of the game. The game at Owatonna, Sunday, was won by the Owatonna team by a score of 12 to 2. The playing was clean and snappy and neither side scored up to the last half of the fifth inning, when a dispute arose over a rank decision by the Owatonna umpire. The Waseca boys felt that the umpire was bound to win for Owatonna and their playing lacked luster for the remainder of the game. Ben Gallagher made his usual good record, striking out seven men. - 100 years ago, June 6, 1912, Waseca Herald
1937/ Homers Beat Waseca Club at Mankato
A short right-field fence, a high wind and a brace of left-handed batsmen spell the difference between victory and defeat to the Waseca club of the Southern Minnesota Association Sunday when they lost to Mankato 5 to 3 on the latter's home grounds. Picked up by the strong wind, the two home runs coming in the first and second innings, were wafted over the right-field fence with the velocity of a chunk of dust going through a vacuum cleaner, bringing in four runs which spelled defeat to a hustling Waseca team. The defeat was especially hard on Pitcher Glenn Baughman who allowed but five hits throughout the game. - 75 years ago, June 9, 1937, Waseca Journal
1962/ Lewis Cards 172 in 36-Hole State Golf Tournament
Jeff Lewis, only the fourth entry from Waseca Central in the state golf tournament, carded a 36-hole total of 172 Monday at this meet, the 35th annual, on the University of Minnesota course. Lewis came in with an opening round card of 89 and finished the second trip with an 83. Jeff was the youngest golfer from Central ever to win a trip to the state meet. He is a sophomore. - 50 years ago, June 6, 1962, Waseca Journal
1962/ Draheim Fails to Place at State Meet Tuesday
Gary Draheim, Central high's track star, participated in the state meet Tuesday at the University of Minnesota but failed to place in two events. Draheim ran in the 120 yard high hurdles. Draheim, even though not scoring in the state, finished the season by setting a new team scoring record for an individual. He piled up a total of 164 points in 11 meets. This breaks the old mark of 160 1/4 set last year by Bill Riviere. Gary will have a chance to surpass this mark as he is only a junior and should be even better next season. - 50 years ago, June 6, 1962, Waseca Journal
1987/ Bluejays make state tourney!
The Waseca Bluejays won the Region One baseball championship with a pair of victories here Wednesday at Committee Field. The Bluejays now advanced to the Class A State Tournament for the first time in history. In 1981 the Bluejays were runner-up in the Class AA State Baseball Tournament. Waseca played the new Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva baseball team in the first game of the region Wednesday afternoon and downed the Big Red 18-1. Then in the evening beat LaCrescent 6-1 to advance to the state. LaCrescent beat Wabasha 14-9 earlier in the day to advance to the region finals against Waseca. The Jays are now 20-3 for the season and will meet Norwood-Young America in a game played at St. Cloud at 5 p.m. Tuesday. - 25 years ago, June 4, 1987, Waseca County News
1987/ Joe Nelson second in state
Bluejay golfers Joe Nelson placed second in the state in a two-day tournament at the St. Cloud Country Club Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Joe is only a sophomore, but experienced in playing at the state as it was his third trip. He said, "I was much more relaxed this time than the other two times I played in the state..." Joe had a good year for the Bluejays while leading his team as medalist in the South Central Conference to the loop championship and then a week later led the Jays to the district title and also being the tournament medalist... Joe is an all-around athlete being the quarterback in football and a forward on the basketball B-squad teams. - 25 years ago, June 4, 1987, Waseca County News
1987/ O'Grady receives international invitation
When she was in fifth grade, she started running with their father around Loon Lake to keep him company. Now, six years later, Mici O'Grady, a Waseca High School sophomore, has been invited to compete in West Germany as part of the International Sports Exchange (ISE) running team. O'Grady will join those runners from the eastern and central states who have been selected as the top high school long-distance runners in the nation... She was chosen on the basis of her 1986 cross-country record... O'Grady holds record times of 11:11 in the 3200 meter run and 5:10 in the 1600 meter run. Charlie Haag, Junior trackster and state cross-country medalist also received an invitation to compete but has decided not to participate. [Mici O'Grady ran in her fourth state meet Saturday and placed 10th in the 1600 meter run. From photo caption.]
