People who lived in or grew up in Waseca from the early 1910s through 1971 are certain to remember the popcorn wagon that was parked uptown either alongside Didra's Drug Store (the early years) or alongside the Rendezvous Cafe (the later years). Unfortunately, the popcorn wagon was lost to Waseca. It was sold and left Waseca in 1973, was restored by some dedicated retirees in Mason City, Iowa, and is now located in the Meredith Willson Music Man Square, Mason City, Iowa. The Twin City Shape-Note Singers will present "A Singing" at the Waseca County Historical Society Museum, Saturday, April 21, 2012, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The Museum is located at 315 2nd Avenue N.E., Waseca, MN. The Twin City Shape-Note Singers have existed as a group for over 25 years, striving to keep alive this 200-year old form of singing. They schedule "singings" for both experienced and the novice singers, at which the singing may be led in either the Denson or Cooper version of The Sacred Harp, a book of music first published in 1844, and continuously in print ever since. . . . Waseca Bluejays Basketball Alumni Day
Todd Dufault, Waseca High School's new basketball coach invites Bluejay basketball alumni 'who are in a position to play' to participate in alumni games on the afternoon of Friday, November 25. Following the games there will be a reception open to all former Bluejay basketball players. The Waseca High School Athletic Hall of Fame has announced six new members to be inducted in 2011, giving the Hall 40 members since it's beginning in 2005. Andy 'Hambone' Papke, 2011 WHS Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee
Andy Papke graduated from Waseca Central High School in 1947 and from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1951. He was one of several athletes who enlisted in the service during World War ll and returned to complete his education after the hostilities ceased. Before entering the Navy, he distinguished himself in athletics, particularly in basketball and football. Hambone Papke was one of the greatest athletes to ever play for Waseca Central. . . . Archie Johnson graduated from Waseca High School in 1959. He was an outstanding athlete at Waseca Central in the late 50's, dedicated to his sport and a great team leader. Jim Howard exemplifies what one looks for in a nominee and inductee for the Waseca High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Jim was not only an exceptional athlete who achieved eight letters in three sports, he also excelled in the classroom. He had the ability, desire, and work ethic to reach his high school goals. Jim was well liked and well respected by his teachers, classmates, coaches and teammates at Waseca Central. He graduated from Waseca High School in 1958 as one of Central's all-around athletes playing in three sports, lettering twice in football, twice in basketball and four times in baseball. . . . Sacred Heart School celebrates beginning of 125th year
Bishop Quinn will be at Sacred Heart on Wednesday, August 31 at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate Mass and the start of the 125th school year. All are invited and welcome to join this event. The school will host an Open House and Ice Cream Social following the Mass. Photos of past graduating classes will be displayed in the school gym.
